A man — why is it always a man? — steals a selkie’s skin and hides it, trapping the helpless fae on land and coercing her into becoming his wife. Imprisoned within her human form, she pines and sighs and wastes away, staring out of the window for hours on end. Although she may eventually come to care for him — bear his children, even — she is unable to suppress her soul-deep longing for the sea.
