Oh FFS, do you really have to write "critics say" the sky is blue? Those are simple facts. I realize it's just a reflex, and this guy probably gave it no thought at all, but that's just the problem. This is what half a century of right-wing bullying has produced in our elite media.
One of Trump’s notable lines referred to a core foundational value of the United States: “Let us defend free speech and free expression.” But critics say Trump has promoted a government-led assault on free speech, free expression and the free press, especially in the aftermath of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist.

In some cases, workers say they lost their jobs for posts that didn’t endorse violence or celebrate Kirk’s murder. The online campaigns also have wrongly implicated some people. Cynthia Rehberg, an associate principal from a Wisconsin elementary school, found her staff photo had been inaccurately posted on X along with a social-media post celebrating Kirk’s death. The school district said it received thousands of comments, along with hundreds of phone calls. Some made direct threats to Rehberg, who says she has nothing but sympathy for the Kirk family. Ryan Fournier, a conservative activist, had promoted the post and took it down late Sunday, several days after the rumor began circulating, she said. On Monday, about 100 students called out of school due to safety concerns, the superintendent, Jason Tadlock says. Fournier later clarified on X that Rehberg hadn’t posted the Kirk-related comment. “Moving forward, we ask that all tips include as many details as possible—along with screenshots and supporting evidence,” he wrote. “We must continue exposing individuals mocking Charlie Kirk’s death, but accuracy is critical.”

This is the real lineage of “Try That in a Small Town.” And as befits the Trump era, the song takes the implicit and makes it explicit. Its violent revenge theme is common in conservative rhetoric, whether it’s gun advocates talking about how they need AR-15s to fend off home invaders or wage war on the government or Trump telling cheering crowds about his desire to inflict violence on liberals. (“I’d like to punch him in the face,” he said about a protester.) It’s why Kyle Rittenhouse is seen by conservatives not as a dumb kid who put himself in a dangerous situation with tragic results, but as a hero and a righteous avenger because he killed two people during civil unrest in Kenosha, Wis., in 2020. This is the dark side of the “small-town values” Republican politicians often advocate, which are supposed to be about things such as honesty, integrity and hard work. Don’t be fooled into thinking that “Try That in a Small Town” is anything but a wishful fantasy. It might sound as though it’s addressed to urbanites, but they’re not the real audience. It’s not a warning against city people coming to small towns; it’s a dream of how great it would be if they did. Then they could finally get what they deserve.

When the topic turned to AI, Kalanick discussed how he uses xAI’s Grok, which went haywire last week, praising Adolf Hitler and advocating for a second Holocaust against Jews. “I’ll go down this thread with [Chat]GPT or Grok and I’ll start to get to the edge of what’s known in quantum physics and then I’m doing the equivalent of vibe coding, except it’s vibe physics,” Kalanick explained. “And we’re approaching what’s known. And I’m trying to poke and see if there’s breakthroughs to be had. And I’ve gotten pretty damn close to some interesting breakthroughs just doing that.”

Todd M. Lyons, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, wrote in a memo to the ICE workforce Wednesday that a Supreme Court ruling last month had cleared the way for officers to “immediately” start sending immigrants to “alternative” countries. People being sent to countries where officials have not provided any “diplomatic assurances” that immigrants will be safe will be informed 24 hours in advance — and in “exigent” circumstances, just six. Those being flown to places that have offered those assurances could be deported with no advance notice.

In addition to being by broad consensus the dumbest member of the United States Senate, Tommy Tuberville is just a stone-cold, unapologetic bigot. If it were the 1920s instead of the 2020s he'd be campaigning in his Klan robes.
Tuberville was asked if President Donald Trump should cut off funding to large “sanctuary” cities that attract immigrants. “You can stop the federal funding,” Tuberville said. “President Trump can do anything he wants when it comes to the federal. Again, these inner-city rats, they live off the federal government. And that’s one reason we’re $37 trillion in debt. “And it’s time we find these rats and we send them back home, that are living off the American taxpayers, that are working very hard every week to pay taxes.” Tuberville drew fire for some comments about whether people from urban areas should come to Alabama. “Well, don’t be expecting a free lunch, I promise you,” he said. “Bring your lunch with you because you’re not going to be welcomed if you’re going to bring that Communist, Islamic atmosphere with you.
