Former business change guy, now living the dream as a student researching improvement in 18thC Yorkshire for MPhil/PhD (and pleasure!). Curious about our ancestors and how they changed the world around them. Love maps, visualisations, manuscripts & Suede.
And Studio Electrophonique opening proceedings. What a treat!

The River Foss looks like it’s filled with mushy peas!

Waiting for a train at York station? There's no better way of passing the time than checking out where you used to be able to travel by train.

Not quite the whole country, just the most magnificent part. 😉

Meet Athelstan.

Take in the detail while you can. He’ll soon be watching over you from the heights of York Minster.

Had a tour of the fabulous new Technology Hub & Quad today. Stunning buildings. They must brilliant to work in. 🤩

Am I too late to become a stone mason?

We don’t need a thermometer in our house.

When the coconut oil melts, that means it’s hot! 🥵

Reflections.

Crown Point Bridge on the River Aire, Leeds.

The second in a very infrequent series!

I’m loving the artwork in the display cabinet in @uoylibrary.bsky.social, but @artatyork.bsky.social what’s the story behind this funky piece?

It appears to be on the back of the canvas. Did the artist ‘reject’ this piece and put the main work on the other side? Or vice versa? Or something else?!

This has some of the tiniest writing I’ve seen. How on earth did they do that without smudging?!

That’s another 500 items added to the Merchant Adventurers catalogue for your delectation.

Cue the search room filled with the sound of a trumpet voluntary! 🎺🎉

Today my Merchant Adventurer activity temporarily switches from cataloguing 16c membership records, to checking out their coffee house.

Still counts as research though.

Surely?

Fascinating how this part of York has changed to meet the city's needs.

Tracks to the old station ran through arches made in the city walls (1840s). A road bridge was built over them to access the new station (1870s).

Tracks and bridge are now gone, but there are still hints of what was there.

The Aire & Calder Navigation in all of its reflective glory today.

It’s seen some action over the past 300 years so it’s only fair that it can take it a bit easier nowadays.

Interesting use of arms to add a sense of authority to this very polite request in Goathland.

If you’re in York this weekend, I highly recommend the Food Festival Taste Trail.

We had great fun today!

What could be nicer than soaking up the history of the place while roaming the streets and popping into local independent eateries for tasty samples.

There are also some beautiful watermarks on the vouchers. I’m curious about the symbolism.

Currently cataloging a little gem at the moment.

Want to know the cost of labour or building materials in the 16th century?

It’s all here in an unassuming bundle of vouchers and notebook from 1555 in the York Merchant Adventurers archive at @uoyborthwick.bsky.social

Look no further. They even do collection!

Interesting symbolism from the stonemason in the yard at York Minster.

Heading to London.

What could be better than spending a day talking maps at @ihr.bsky.social?

How about TWO days!

What a treat. 😁

I should have brought my notebook. 🙄

This was supposed to be my holiday reading but now I’m making follow-up notes on the back of receipts, ferry tickets, and even scraps of tourist maps.

Fabulous book by @jonathanhealey.bsky.social - enlightening, authoritative and very readable. 👍

I came across this curious undated note in a bundle of eighteenth century receipts (mainly meals!) in the York Merchant Adventurers collection.

#skystorians, what do you think is going on? Gold hit this price several times in 18C, but could it be 1774 recoinage? Or something else?

‘These are waste papers.’

Fortunately, the 17thC packing label was ignored!

I’ve just catalogued this fabulous collection of 15thC-17thC correspondence from the York Merchant Adventurers.

Need an excuse for more chocolate?

Don't bother with a picnic on your next day trip; just go for Rowntree's "lunch at the wheel"!
