‘News’ from the Scottish Daily Record about Rasputin. Must admit I’d been wondering what he’d been up to lately.

I always try and read something in memory of the fallen around this time of year and Nicholas Murray’s book on the World War I poets is moving, nuanced and brilliant.

One of many highlights on today’s charity book shift…

Simply trying to research an article on cities of the future and this is what the US Development Agency website says. It’s so far from normal, it’s virtually totalitarian.

RIP Robert Redford. Obviously there are the iconic roles but he also had the guts to make riskier films like Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here, Downhill Racer and The Candidate. And he is one of the few stars who could have made Jeremiah Johnson a commercial hit.

This deluded individual has clearly never watched a single Eurovision vote in his life…

Geoff Dyer’s memoir Homework is a master class in using specific details - creosote, Babycham, conkers - to tell a universal story. He really makes you feel as if his childhood is yours. Genius.

What a picture! Salvador Dali using Laurence Olivier as a model on the set of Richard III, Shepperton Studios, 1955

Pathetic stuff from The Times. Surely not being ‘in’ with Trump is a virtue for Starmer.

Visited Orford Ness in Suffolk today, a deserted spit and former military base, with a landscape that feels both post apocalyptic and the perfect backdrop for a spaghetti western. Eerie and unforgettable.

Just got my first Panini sticker for the 2026 World Cup: Gianni Infantino.

Jeremiah Johnson is one of those movies that seems to unfold like life itself. Much underrated.

Great @royalacademy Summer Exhibition this year. A fair sprinkling of sheds and this, The Boxer on TV by Jake Garfield.

That trusted - actually rusted - journalistic stand by ‘If ‘x’ were held today, ‘y’ would happen - except it won’t because ‘x’ is years away. As Bob Dylan so nearly said, ‘The Times it is a changing - for the worse’.

I always wondered what Jon Pertwee did when he wasn’t a Time Lord or a scarecrow, but I didn’t expect to record ‘Three Little Fishes’ for the B-side of a single for children
