Catch-22 + Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas during junior high school pretty much finished any respect I had for adult authority, or belief in an orderly universe.

I read it this year. You mentioned Dune elsewhere in this thread and Warlock reminded me of Dune with its worldbuilding. Of course it's not as deep or weird as Dune, but that town and people came to life. It helps that everything is an echo of westerns you already know. Warlock cast a spell on me!

I watched the film this week for the first time in forever and was struck by how much it was the kind of story Americans love to tell about themselves, for better or worse.

Have you read Warlock, by Oakley Hall?
