It’s a dirty little secret of classic rock that Bowie was on balance a pretty crappy lyricist.

But he learned possibly better than anybody else the central lesson of major phase Bob Dylan: the words can be absolute gibberish as long as they *sound* cool.

I’m glad he mellowed with age (and/or psychotropics). He was a noticeably scary young dude in a scene with a lot of contenders & pretenders.

Wow. 😳 He was genuinely unhinged and recognizably so. The only time I saw him in person was at a Fear/DOA show and he stood out even amidst a sea of intimidating South Bay beach punks. The kind of crazy that you instinctively avoid making eye contact with.

People should listen to more Captain Beefheart and less Zappa or Rundgren.

This photo perfectly matches & embodies the vibe of the “knows what’s up” posts.

Isn’t the editing amazing? The match of HR & the character mouths is so close.

As was inscribed in Hammurabic cuneiform, this is ancient law and has always been thus and just.

All because he thought it would be funny to play hard guitar parts while standing perfectly still and grinning, as compared to hard rock guys who would grimace like torture victims while doing noodly scale exercises.

My first, 1981, very similar elements plus cringe-inducing awkward adolescent received doctrinaire leftie sloganeering.

What a long strange trip etc.

Because my dad was a jazzbo with season tickets at the Hollywood Bowl while I was a punk rocker, I once saw Ella Fitzgerald and Throbbing Gristle concerts within about 3 months.
