There are many Philodendrons in my collection, too many to count or critique.
My favourite is always the latest I bought, scored or gifted.
Presently my favourite is Philodendron burle-marxii.
The variegated leaf version is a wonderful acquisition, gifted to me by a colleague.
Yes, I love it.

Heliconia rostrata 'Dwarf' is a good alternative in a tropical garden when you don't want a giant sized specimen dominating the landscape design.

Tropical dwarf
Most keen tropical gardeners are growing or have tried or wish to grow Heliconias.
While many heliconias are giants of the forest there are also small species worth considering.
This one is a bit unusual and a collector's find - Heliconia rostrata 'Dwarf'.

Ginger
Not all ginger is eaten or drunk as ginger beer.
Many of the ginger group (Zingiber, Alpinia, etc.) have highly attractive foliage and flowers.
If you live in a tropical or subtropical climate, it is highly likely you are already growing these fascinating plants.

We often see gum trees as scary big trees that fall on buildings and catch fire.
However, there are dwarf cultivars that can easily be pruned into a bush and thereby planted near buildings.

Phaius orchids are stately terrestrial specimens worth growing.
The flower spike can easily reach 1m in height.

Dwarf Umbrella trees - actually shrubs, but the poor things are stuck with that terrible common name 'tree'.
The variegated forms of this plant add a delightful splash of colour to a garden.
These are tough plants when grown outdoors in warm climates and rarely need much TLC.

Angels dare not tread.
I love them, but many gardeners fear angel trumpets (Brugmansia) due to their notorious reputation of poisonous compounds.
I say 'plant more' but educate the public how safe they can be in gardens.
