It's time for DEFRA to get honest with consumers and stop pandering to the industry. There is no such thing as a 'free range' poultry in England currently and - with bird flu a new reality - there may not be for some time.

A chicken or turkey that has never been outside cannot be free-range by definition. This is because it does not range-free, or ever see the light of day. It is 'barn reared' at best and more likely a sad old 'battery' bird.

YES, you can lockdown all poultry in England to try and stop the spread of avian influenza (as has been the case since 6 November). But NO, you cannot continue to allow it to be labelled 'free-range' because it is not.
