Long time Lib Dem and retired travel agent. That's my Lady friend at the Bois des Moutiers near Dieppe. Only picture I had that was long and thin!
We had a joint programme for government which was voted on by us LibDems at a special meeting in Birmingham. I was there. Support was overwhelming. The Tories of course just left it to Cameron and cronies.

Yes I noticed the similarities with Cleggmania. It is a mystery to me what Clegg really did wrong. He said he would coalition with the largest party and did so. Mistakes were made but that is par for the course. IMO It was a better government than any since!

This is rather pathetic

From Google: The total revenue from wealth-based taxes (in Spain) in 2023 was roughly €3.1 billion, i.e. that is the total revenue from wealth taxes not just from billionaires. In fact, there are over a million Spaniards paying wealth taxes. A tax I support! I'm just asking for realistic numbers.
November 4, 2025 at 11:57 PM
I love to research that figure. Are you saying that those Spanish billionaires pay €100 million every year in tax?
November 4, 2025 at 11:43 PM
No, who does?? does HMRC?? mine was a simple guess but on the low side! If I'm wrong the annual tax proposed would be even higher!
November 4, 2025 at 11:25 PM
That's an interesting idea. Please , which countries are you talking about? UK has minimum wage regulations (we can discuss how well they work).
November 4, 2025 at 11:23 PM
When you say it doesn't have to be like this - do you have an example where it has worked? Cuba? China? Finland??
November 4, 2025 at 6:31 PM
Yes, I read this and noticed this: A Wealth Tax of 1% annually on assets above £10 million and of 2% on assets above £1bn. Only a tiny minority of people would pay this tax.
There are 171 Billionaires 2% represents £44m each year for each billionaire. I suspect the money will fly away!!
November 4, 2025 at 6:26 PM
As I said, I am looking forward to the Green's costings at the next General election. In the last manifesto they proposed to raise 2% every year from 171 billionaires. I guess that's c. £40 million every year from each one. Is that realistic?

If this policy is in the next manifesto it will be costed.
DWP figures show 3.6m children living in absolute poverty after housing costs.
1.6m children in 440,000 families are affected by the two-child benefit cap.
Abolition of the two-child benefit cap would take 300,000 children out of poverty.

God stops the boats!!

I'm hopeful that the Reform surge has peaked.
October 31, 2025 at 9:42 AM
Not everyone agrees with you!

Bromsgrove South (Worcestershire) Council By-Election Result:

🔶 LDM: 51.9% (+20.3)
➡️ RFM: 33.4% (-1.5)
🌳 CON: 11.3% (-5.8)
🌹 LAB: 3.4% (-4.1)

No GRN (-5.5) or Ind (-3.4) as previous.

Liberal Democrat GAIN from Reform.

I understand your anger. If we change the voting system (as ideally we will) all future Governments will be coalitions. Coalition = compromise!

???????
October 31, 2025 at 9:06 AM
Yes to Jess!!
October 31, 2025 at 9:04 AM
Thank you for listening to my case!

History will judge that 😔

Pupil premium! We kept Brexit at bay for another four years. The voters punished us severely for our efforts in 2015.
October 31, 2025 at 8:02 AM
We can't do without politicians. The alternative is dictatorship.
October 31, 2025 at 7:57 AM
It was an option we considered. However we would not have ever been taken seriously as a political force if - given the chance - we didn't take it. The coalition was a better government than any that followed it. Cameron on his own would have called another election within a year.
October 31, 2025 at 7:57 AM
I think the point of political parties is to gain power. One hopes in order to make positive changes.
October 31, 2025 at 7:53 AM
The Green Party has policies. They're unrealistic. For example, expecting to raise £40 million every year from each billionaire in the country.
