with hailstones

Standing

Amidst tall trees,
the path unwinding
in brown leaves
and grassy patches.

Puddles

The mossy carpet
interspersed with
the underbelly of
a netherworld —

Showing itself,
breathing a slight
damp, luring in
every trace of humidity.

Silence

Only drops
from the heavens,
following their
invisible trail —

Tree branches,
then bush blades,
then moss spores,
then soil once more.

Sound

Birds have interludes
of pecking,
tweeting, chirping,
warning.

Great fluttering,
leaves rustling,
audible commotion —
then, again, nothing.

Moving

Away from this
layered realm of
carbon holders,
into the human abyss.

It’s not the Sun’s magic. It’s the trees embracing you when the weather seems miserable. It’s the smallest sounds of birds, cracks, and seeps that acknowledge the life that’s still there — no matter the weather.
