I would say it is really surprising how little the entry is "dividing the nation". 15 years ago it would have been considered scandalous by many but now it is approved as an Eurovision entry by almost everybody, save some elderly people and a few conservatives.

It is not a new thing. Lappalainen is an old exonym for the Sami people and they prefer to be referred to as saamelainen, based on endonym. Lappilainen means that a person lives or is from Lapland, whatever the ethnicity. Here is an article about the topic from 1977 kielikello.fi/lappilainen/
