Black Elk Peak (formerly known as Harney Peak) in the Black Hills of South Dakota, circa 1920 and July 26, 2025. The first fire lookout building and the last one, built 1938 and standing today. Another view in a series for #SouthDakotaYesterdayandToday with a book coming out in mid-2026.

Steamboats at Running Water, SD on the Missouri River (South Dakota State Historical Society photo.) I estimate this is an 1880s-90s photograph. I visited the site again recently, and a local resident pointed me to the area where a ferry and steamboats once docked. #southdakotayesterdayandtoday

A short stretch of 6th St. in Sioux Falls, SD has been left unpaved to reveal history through the Sioux Quartzite paving stones, which are apparently hidden under pavement of at least some sections of streets around downtown.

Mt. Rushmore National Memorial; circa 1933 when Jefferson was being carved to the left side of Washington. Problems with the rock caused sculptor Guzton Borglum to remove that carving and try again on the other side where we see Jefferson today. #SouthDakotaYesterdayandToday

I made a stop at Wall Drug last week to re-supply and as always enjoyed chatting with Barb in the bookstore. She's so knowledgeable about books on the history of our state and region and showed me several new titles they just added to their inventory. Of course they also stock all of the classics!😊

I’m back from a road trip east of the Black Hills, working on the #southdakotayesterdayandtoday project. Among other places last week I was in Philip at a site I’d found years ago but wanted to get better light and accuracy. The truck pulling a tractor helping match past activity was a bonus.😄

Igloo, S.D. (formerly the Black Hills Ordinance Depot), yesterday (April 8, 2025) and circa 1940s. Postcard photo by Axel W. Hultgren from the South Dakota State Historical Society archives.

Provo, S.D. yesterday (April 8, 2025) and in 1942. Postcard by O'Neill Photo from the Robert Kolbe Collection. So what do you think…do you like these views of what might turn out to be more obscure towns and locations as I continue searching for “yesterday and today” across the state this summer?

Deadwood, SD circa 1880s and a few days ago. Roughly the same location...it's not easy to tell with the trees and landscape changes, but I think the other photographer and I would have been in view of each other if not stepping on each other.😅 #SouthDakotaYesterdayandToday

Check out my last presentation in Custer, South Dakota for the local historical society and 1881 Courthouse Museum! I touched on the history of the 1874 Custer Expedition, Black Elk Peak, Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park and more. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gndk...

I've posted 100+ "South Dakota Yesterday & Today" images at the link. This is work completed in the past few years, and I hope to add perhaps 200-300 more views from across the state over the coming months. With a view toward publication of a book in 2026. www.paulhorsted.com/Prints/South...

I speak at Rapid City (SD) Public Library next Wednesday, Feb. 19. Their free, regular “Lunch & Learn” program starts at noon with my talk after that. You can bring a lunch if you’d like! New work from ongoing “South Dakota Yesterday & Today” project, for a book a year from now (I hope.)

It's interestin' to see how many people I know bailed from Facebook to Bluesky in just the past 48 hours or so. I'm trying to follow everyone who I migrates. I'm still not sure how this is going to work but am glad we have a decent alternative to the mess over there.

Deadwood, South Dakota "yesterday and today". From the forthcoming (2026) book I'm working on this year. My goal is to capture about 300 views like this one across the state of South Dakota.

Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, 1933 and a few days ago. From a forthcoming South Dakota book I hope will be in print by mid-2026.

A visit to Sturgis, SD last week for my ongoing (and eventual book) "South Dakota Yesterday & Today" project. The yearly gigantic motorcycle rally in Sturgis has over time caused the conversion of most businesses on Main Street to biker-related ventures, many of them not open this time of year.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting will soon face a 65% cut in state funding under a budget proposed by Governor Kristi Noem. Many South Dakotans oppose any cuts to this essential service in our diverse, rural state. Please see this page for how to help: sdpbfriends.org/advocacy/

Long-tailed weasel in the Black Hills today. It was a joy to watch it for a couple of minutes as it moved quickly across and through some rocks near a road somewhere west of Mt. Rushmore. And yes there's a reason I'm primarily a still photographer, not a videographer...

Top of Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, early 1930s, later 1930s, and in 2003 when I was up there at sunrise, at a time when it was still feasible to do this if you were on a media assignment or working on a project for the Park Service. #history #yesterdayandtoday #SouthDakota

Silver Gate in Yellowstone National Park, 1905 and more recently...this was the main (wagon) road which wound through the park many years ago, but it was later cut off by the current highway. It remains as a backwater loop picnic area. From our book "Yellowstone Yesterday & Today".
