I hate to fly because there's no solution to planes' global warming and none forthcoming.

But if you have family who live across the sea what do you do?

To see them I fly. I will at least take pictures out of the window. This shows in the distance the power grid near Incheon and Seoul, Korea.

This footbridge crosses a main road in central Taipei. The alternative is zebras at street level, waiting nearly two minutes for the lights. Out of a crowd, only two took the footbridge. I know why they built them (in Richmond too, where I live), but why do we hate them, and why didn't they know?

Port du Loiron, Angoulins, France, yesterday afternoon. A dozen cabins facing a little harbour, an umbrella pine.

International train ticketing perhaps taken a bit far - these are the options that first come up when you are in Cefalù (north Sicily) and want to buy a ticket to Agrigento (south Sicily). But, as Jon Worth would argue, better to make it easier than impossible.

Vermeer's girl with a pearl at the beach café at Petten, North Holland. I love manifestations of this picture (and of the milkmaid, who's actually doing something, even more).

I love this sardonic (Dutch, of course) re-use of the EU's A-G scale.

Shoes on the Amsterdam metro (if Saul Leiter can do it so, far less well, can I)

Amsterdam metro at the weekend. Travelling on it I felt it was soulless compared with the homely trams - but this photo shows the metro's less homely virtues.

Brick wall, bikes, daffodils and daisies - Kattenburgerstraat, Amsterdam, at the weekend

Right through the Rijksmuseum there is a passageway along which bikes pass. Museum directors who fancied this extra space have failed to get it closed off.

Quite a few buildings (eg the British museum) have made a roof over a courtyard. I think the Rijskmuseum in Amsterdam, where we were today, has done it well.

Canal bridge in sunshine (sorry for going on about the sunshine, but it's been a long long time) from the no. 14 tram, Amsterdam yesterday afternoon (50s? 60s?)

Eurostar going over the viaduct into Brussels Midi station, in sunshine yesterday lunchtime

Going up to the Eurostar platform, St Pancras yesterday in morning sunshine

Waiting in London for the train to Amsterdam. All the Paris Eurostars are cancelled (old bomb on the tracks at gare du Nord) - means the waiting area is just full, not packed out. I love getting this train but the waiting areas (Brussels the worst) let it down. Anyway, soon be speeding through Kent.
