Climate and energy policy. Currently at Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator, planning for a future net zero energy system.

Views are entirely mine.
Feels like another important milestone reached for @bsky.app.

According to estimates by the @iea.org, around 750 million people lack access to electricity, the vast majority in Sub-Saharan African countries.

For household level decarbonisation, EVs and heat pumps are a winning combination. Add in some flexibility - such as overnight charging of EVs and home storage, and running appliances - and emissions are cut even further.

@andrewdessler.com I seem to remember you writing a thread on the other site about cold and heat deaths. Is it accessible anywhere else? I was prompted by this piece.

Although the UK train operator at the 'top' of the charts comes as no surprise to this semi-regular user.

That's busted a big myth:

BYD now offering an advanced self-driving system on its entire range including the budget model. Hard to see how other EV manufacturers can compete, on tech at least.

Yes, onshore wind (and solar) can be very cost effective, including when combined with batteries to offer a 'firm' supply of electricity. The chart below is the latest estimates of the levelized costs of energy for solar and wind in US power markets, from Lazard.

Storm Éowyn is making its way to Ireland and the UK bringing some of the strongest winds in decades. You can see the storm interacting with the UK's fleet of offshore wind farms (second only to China) on this beautiful visualisation from @robhawkes.bsky.social.

Solar power beats coal for the first time in Europe, a new milestone!

Last year, solar generated 11% of Europe's electricity, surpassing coal generation at 10%. And that trend will only continue.

Nothing new or surprising here, sadly, but an important reminder nonetheless of the scale of the work needed to cut our emissions to reduce impacts from a warming atmosphere.

The article is referring to this book. I got it out of the library last week out of curiosity. Couldn't get past the first few pages. Sure, we've come from a place of energy additions, but the past does not have to guide the future. We can choose.
