I image there will always some 'apply' button before it actually changes anything. And if you want to be able to review the changes I guess you don't want it to be binary.

Configuration through json sounds like an important improvement.
This would also allow editing of the json by agents. Because of AI I expect a general trend towards all software using more old fashioned configuration files.
