Frustrated that I got impatient & had to take a letter. Then saw it straight away & it seemed just so obvious!

That was with me supervising. I imagine if she’s on her own it may be worse… & so will end up spending more time making (& maybe remaking) instead of using (which I have a hunch is what happened over h/t). Would love some thoughts on how to help her overcome this!

I am working with a student on effective revision & I was showing her how to make/use effective flashcards. Hit a real barrier when she made a mistake & just completely froze - didn’t want to start again, but hated the idea of having something messy. She kind of fudged it a bit in the end…

Which sadly also (often) means “if you’re having problems it’s because you’re a weak teacher”

Yeah, I agree with all of that. But I do miss the intellectual engagement & the depth/breadth of community. It was literally transformative for me a few years ago. I don’t think what’s on offer now - across whatever platforms - would have the same impact for someone else.

Ironically, this discussion is one of the few times recently that BS has got close to what it used to be like on Twitter!

I was v optimistic about BS but it's been mediocre mostly. There isn't the engagement / discussion here (tho also not the bile & pile-ons which is nice!). More generally, everything's just a lot more fractured as ppl using X, BS, substack, linkedin... Felt a lot more cohesive a couple of years ago.

Yeah, that was my hunch. I just don’t know how people have time & energy to be across so many different platforms!

Seems like substack is trying to be more like another SM platform with discussion, 'restacks' etc and clearly current zeitgeist!
Wordpress was always popular because it was pretty easy to get started, don't how different/better/worse substack is for actually writing stuff.

Thanks for this - it explains an unease I’ve had for some time with this distinction but been unable to articulate.
Do you think this might also represents an element of ‘gate-keeping’ or even intellectual snobbery? (“Don’t use these terms because you’re not clever enough to use them properly!”)
