New paper from me!

We had a close look at seismo-acoustic data from all across Aotearoa after the spectacular 2022 eruption of Hunga volcano. We found evidence for rare and weird acoustic phenomena, particularly booming noises triggered by a Lamb wave and an extremely rare Pekeris wave.

Did you hear booming noises in Aotearoa New Zealand in January 2022? You probably heard a volcano erupting in Tonga!

Check out our new open access article where we use thousands of public reports from across the whole country to complement geophysical observations of the Hunga volcano eruption.

Kia Ora to all my new followers over the weekend 👋 I should probably reintroduce myself. I work on volcanoes by looking at volcanic earthquakes and sound waves. I also help monitor active volcanoes across Aotearoa New Zealand 🇳🇿

Whakaari in New Zealand has been erupting for a couple of weeks, and even disrupting flights. It even made the 6pm news yesterday ( see video at www.1news.co.nz/2024/08/22/f...). Unfortunately, the only volcanologist available for interview was some muppet who needs a haircut!

Meanwhile, recent observation flights over Whakaari/White Island #volcano confirm it continues to emit low levels of volcanic gas and steam accompanied by hydrothermal activity. 🇳🇿🌋
