It's ridiculous, isn't it? They've passed a tipping point where the clickbait AI junk has become utterly useless to humans. I inadvertently clicked on a Chronicle link about the new Stack in Newcastle and got this, unreadable nonsense:

Football fans: Ever been inside an empty stadium—on a tour, after a match—and felt something strange? A lingering echo of noise, emotion, presence, like it's still alive, even when no one is there? Have you ever experienced the uncanny atmosphere of an absent crowd? Let me know, for a thing... ⚽👻

Long gone, I'm afraid, but here's a non Geordie Jeans variant from around that time.

This is a bad decision by the way. VAR's tech isn't accurate enough to overrule something this tight. Striker's elbow vs defender's shoulder? The linesman had a better view. Onside. Great goal. 3-0 (5-0 agg.) #NUFC

Enjoyed this as always. I wonder if the Wreford Brown story originated following the Pilgrims tours of the US around 1904/05, which do seem to have popularised the use of "soccer" (or "socker") over there. Nice little letter here in the NYT from 1905. Tabor was a teacher who promoted boys' soccer.

"A rare instrument known as a 'recorder'". Resembles a flute, popular in Elizabethan times, mentioned in Hamlet... and foisted upon every 1980s schoolkid when they really would have preferred to learn the guitar.
