Just finished this book. Mass death from disease, exploitation, or subjugation can play a role in the creation of autocratic empires. But, it can also lead to their demise.

Reading this now. So much context for modern times. We are witnesses, victims, and complicit. Rarely do people experiencing collapse see the big picture. Instead, we deal with each crisis as best as possible whether a flood, a pandemic, a food shortage, or other collapse related calamity.

From the book I'm reading:

"Individuals rarely recognize that they are living through a collapse [of society]. Instead, they sensibly perceive the discrete disasters unfolding in front of them."

Reading this book. Comforting in a surprising way. Most collapses are caused by increasing wealth inequity, elite rivalry/status competition, climate change or environmental degredation, corruption, tax evasion, pandemics, and foreign invasions.
