Ah yes, memories of the very successful ERASMUS+ scheme we used to have for public health trainees. A victim of Brexit. However we still have the Young Forum Gastein scheme, with @paula171.bsky.social going this year

The #FTWeekendFestival has to be one of my highlights of the year. From AI to domestic & geopolitics. Really should be near top of priority list for colleagues in public health in & around London
@paula171.bsky.social & I getting lots of ideas for follow up of our forthcoming book on AI in health

Just out in Int J Health Plan Management: our new paper on AI and anti-corruption efforts in health systems w/ @martinmckee.bsky.social and @dinabalabanova.bsky.social

May AI help or hinder?

This thread offers a great summary of our findings — worth a look! 👇
🧵 1️⃣ Corruption in health systems is pervasive. It diverts resources, erodes trust, and lowers care quality. Our new paper in Int J Health Plan Management led by @paula171.bsky.social w/ @dinabalabanova.bsky.social asks whether AI might help or hinder?

Important paper for our forthcoming #LancetGlobalHealthCommissiononAnti-corruption. A lot can be gained by using AI-enabled approaches but there is a need for new skills, capacities and power to use it for good

6️⃣ The way forward
Invest in:
• Skilled personnel 👩‍💻
• Data interoperability 📂
• Participatory oversight mechanisms 🗳️
• Ethical AI policies 🌐

AI should support—not replace—human judgment.

5️⃣ AI’s dual nature
AI can uncover hidden fraud or enable corruption on an unprecedented scale. Success hinges on who controls the data and tools—governments, civil society, or private entities.

4️⃣ Governance is key
For AI to be effective, we need:
• Transparent algorithms ⚖️
• Strong human oversight 🧑‍⚖️
• Legal and ethical frameworks 🛡️
Poor implementation risks false accusations and perpetuating inequities.

3️⃣ But risks abound…
AI isn’t neutral. Biases in data and algorithms can reinforce corruption rather than combat it. Authoritarian misuse of AI can suppress dissent while protecting elites.

2️⃣ How AI helps: Anti-Corruption Tools (ACTs)
• Detect anomalies in procurement & billing 📊
• Spot counterfeit medicines 🔍
• Enhance transparency via blockchain integration 🔗
Examples: AI bots flagging suspicious expenses, detecting bid-rigging, or mapping drug supply chains.

Today is #InternationalWomensDay

Progress on #GenderEquality in health care is too slow.
Women have distinct & changing health needs at different stages of their lives. Health care should be easy to access, fair & tailored to meet each woman’s unique needs & circumstances.

Violence against women demands urgent attention.

One in three women faces physical or sexual violence, and nearly 25% of workplace violence happens in hospitals or clinics — and women are most affected.
