Yes. This is a fair point , but the intensity of the conflict now is on quite a different level compared to the 2014.

Having covered the war in Afghanistan from Pakistan 30 years ago, I fear there is no quick end to the conflict in Ukraine. The Soviets/Russians stayed in Afghanistan for ten years before pulling out. Sadly, there is still insufficient pressure on Putin to withdraw from Ukraine in the foreseeable.

I think for its time ‘ Purchas, his Pilgrimes’ , 1622, held the record , but it may have been surpassed by some other megalith of print later in the century.

Fascinating. Do we have any record of this type, smaller than that used for the Bible , being used for any other print runs at about the same time, or does it seem to be unique to the Catholicon?

Benn Steil, The Battle of Bretton Woods, page 289, sets out the alternatives that were available. Given Keynes’ illness , and, quite simply his conviction that as the cleverest man available he was the best negotiator , I think it was difficult for him to step back and investigate other options.

Perhaps the reason why he promoted the US $4Bn federal loan to the UK after WW2 on conditions assessed by some as more stringent than a syndicated banking loan would have been.
