a thing I feel is overlooked by those who say they can only write from inspiration is making shit up is a skill, you have to practice it, play with it, startle yourself with it—of course inspiration can swoop down at any time, but it’s like waiting for a man in a thong to sing opera in a book store.

after 25 years I finally figured out the formula for writing a good poem: you just say what you want to say, cut all the boring stuff, thwack it with a thesaurus, then you grow wings out of your back, oh no they’re bat wings, oh god will your loved ones still love you, time to fly to the moon
