He openly opposed Brazil’s military regime (1964–1985) showing resistance through football. Corinthians wore jerseys with "Democracia" and "Diretas Já" (Direct Elections Now) supporting democratic reforms. Sócrates - "If elections don’t change anything, why are dictatorships so afraid of them?"

Sócrates co-founded the "Corinthians Democracy" movement at Corinthians in the early 1980s, during Brazil’s military dictatorship.
