Latest read, Shane (1949) by Jack Schaefer; read this story, of a gunman siding with a homesteader against cattlemen, in the 8th grade.
And--it's fine school curriculum. About integrity, fidelity, courage, pride of ownership, & force as a last resort.
It's direct (as Westerns are). Loved it

Joyce Carol Oates takes on other people are much better than their takes on her.
She's an incredible writer.
Quit demanding writers agree with ALL of your personal ideas. Stop confusing a good book for a pat on the back.

My daughter's new puppy. Her mother-in-law told my daughter the puppy's not that cute.
I face-palmed.
1) she is THAT cute
2) why would she say that?

Latest read, The Man Who Was Thursday (1908) by GK Chesterton; an investigation into an anarchic plot becomes a metaphysical revelation.
Unique and amusing.
Fond of fantasies in which curtains part, layers are peeled away, to reveal true natures & realities.
Loved it even more this time.

Latest read, The Grand Banks Cafe (1931) by Georges Simenon; used to not think of myself as much of a series reader. Simenon's pragmatic, unflappable Inspector Maigret changed that.
This 9th book involves uncooperative fishermen, the woman who stole onboard their trawler, & a murder.

Latest read, The Werewolf of Paris (1933) by Guy Endore; though referred to as the Dracula of werewolf stories that statement may mislead. Its origin story is weak no matter how Endore tries, and stylistically it wavers between gratuitous pulp & attempts at insight.
Still, no regrets.

Latest read (audio), A Case of Conscience (1958) by James Blish; a Jesuit priest in the star-spanning future determines an alien utopia is Satanic because it lacks God.
An idea stronger than its execution. Blish doesn't really explore the theological conflict.
Still, it's notable early sf.

Latest read (audio), Heroes and Villains (1969) by Angela Carter; Carter writes about sex that flirts with dark attractions & dangerous relationships. Here, in a post-apocalypse, a civilized woman runs away with a marauding barbarian.
And their battlefield becomes a sexual one.

Latest read (audio), Just So Stories (1902) by Rudyard Kipling. Whimsical tales of how elephants got their trunks, camels their humps, why cats behave the way they do, and so on.
Kipling read 3 of the stories for his daughter Josephine, who died at age 6.
Years later he completed the book.

On the other hand, if the character looks interesting, they aren't broken and you should stay on model; Dum Dum Dugan, Peter Gyrich (same applies to J. Jonah Jameson, the Osborns, Agatha Harkness, etc)

Some advice from someone whose drawn hundreds of comics.
Don't stay 'on model' (follow the reference) for supporting characters if the characters are bland.
I learned this in hindsight. Too faithful to continuity.
Repeating a boring 'look' is compounding a mistake.

I love that they're doing this. I used to live a couple of miles from the town Paul Norris (creator of Aquaman) grew up in. No plaque, nothing.
Way to go Greensboro.
