Republican voters have been marinating 40+ years in distrust of govt and expertise. Reagan said,”I've always felt the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help.” Climate crises are sadly testing this in tragic ways.

Can finally distinguish a black spruce (on the right) from a white spruce). The shorter needle length on the black spruce is tricky to identify but the difference in cones is a dead giveaway!

Just back from a visit to Valencia Spain- nary a sign of a homeless encampment, tents in public parks or on the medians. The clean streets, the network of bike lanes, the biggest urban park in Europe makes me think the city also has a progressive response to homelessness.

Reading Daniel Kahneman’s great book “Thinking, Fast and Slow”. He talks about ‘norm theory’ and how “very little repetition is needed for a new experience to feel normal.” As we blow through norms on a daily basis we must be vigilant to never normalize the extreme.
