The powerful tribes that roamed these plains centuries before L+C. This painting, finished in 1912, serves as a reminder of our perspective on land, how we ought to treat each other, and to remind ourselves that we are not the only ones who matter in this world, something I strive to remember always

L+C are so insignificant in this painting because they would be seen as such in the eyes of the warrior tribe. They were not great explorers as we knew them, they were lost and desperately looking for a way to complete their mandate by the US. Russell brilliantly gives the true spotlight to

Behind them are we have named The Gates of The Mountains, where Lewis and Clark came from in search of a passage to lead them through the daunting Rocky Mountain Front, and if you look closely, you can see Lewis and Clark draped in animal hide clothing while their interpreter and guide Sacagewea.

When you look at the painting, the first major feature that draws you to it is a band of Blackfeet on horseback, in a display of power and pride. Behind them are the rest of the tribe, accompanied by their dogs and a ram's skull sitting in the grass.

When he thought of what to paint for the House, he knew he had to paint, Lewis and Clark meeting with the Blackfeet tribes and forming relations, but he would not paint L+C in the usual fashion that so many had grown accustomed to. He would depict them in the most plausible way he could imagine

He traveled out west, like so many of us, to find a life for himself and saw his purpose in painting the American west as he saw it before it would disappear. He painted vivid pieces of bison, plains tribes of several nations in the region, and loved montana's Rocky Mountain Front with all his heart

Charlie Russell was commissioned to make this piece specifically for the state House of Representatives. To put it bluntly, Russell understood what he needed to paint. Russell is regarded as the cowboy artist.

After the house dismissed for recess, I was even fortunate enough to meet the representatives of my home town and my place of work. Yesterday was the first day in a long time where I felt civic duty and responsibility actually means something.

After the protest concluded, I went into my capital to see a beautiful painting made by Charlie Russell, but was surprised to learn that the state house was in session. I decided to sit and watch firsthand the inner workings of my state gvt.
