A letter issued along with a medal of service during WWII reads: The Pres of the US takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star to Welsey Bell. For heroic achievement while in charge of a collecting Section attached to the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima. Braving intense enemy mortar fire following the landing on D-Day, Bell organized his litter team & proceeded immediately to the front lines to render first aid to wounded marines, time & again crossing the beach under heavy fire. During the remaining days of the campaign, he repeatedly went to the front lines to evacuate casualties. His courage & devotion to duty were in keeping either the highest traditions of the United Stated Navel Services. Bell is authorized to wear the Combat V.
