This is a lot more scientific than my answer 😂.

I believe (recalling my forensics rotations a while back now), it is due to gravity separating the RBCs from plasma, giving the distinct look.

Key learning point here of course is differenting postmortem clots from antemortem thombi.

Bit late to the post, but agree with pertussis/reactive lymphs. I often have to stress to our techs, to take a step back with "baby lymphs“ as they can look scary.
