Fresh flowers at Ft. Williams to honor the crew of the USS Eagle, which was torpedoed by a German U-Boat off the Maine coast 80 years ago this week. The crew was not awarded Purple Hearts until 1999 when it was proven that the sinking was caused by enemy action, not faulty boilers.
