As my profile indicates, under PM Trudeau, I knew of our complicity in the Israeli genocide of Palestinians. The palpable sense of shame that I felt then, is magnified now by the ongoing duplicitous nature of our government under PM Carney. Although it comes as no surprise given PM Carney's refusal to use the term genocide, which he further reinforced by expressing his desire for the future of a, "Zionist Palestine", still the disappointment, the overwhelming disillusionment in government, is visceral. Is there really no honour in our society, no trustworthy government, no one left to vote for? I realize that war is a profitable business, but I never realized how morally corrupt a Canadian government could be, choosing profits even in the face of genocide. Canada as a peacemaker no longer exists.

I used to know Anthony Housefather. Not well, but he was a frequent guest on my radio shows on CJAD and then during the pandemic, we started to go for walks, talking off the record about politics and journalism. After Oct. 7, we went for a walk and realized that our views on the war on Gaza were very different. The only time I reached out to him after that was when he was rumoured to cross the floor. I texted him and implored him not to. It seems that our budding friendship didn’t stand a chance with opposing views on such a delicate issue. Housefather has had every opportunity to speak out. When a hospital was bombed, and then another one bombed, and another, he did not speak out. When videos were released of people being burned alive in tents, he didn’t speak out. When a Canadian aid worker with the World Soup Kitchen was targeted and killed by Israeli missiles, Anthony Housefather said nothing. So much silence in the face of so many atrocities. I received another email from my building; Housefather would be coming to the building and canvassing. I was home, but alas, he never knocked. The Army also recently announced it will make law of war training — which covers basic battlefield ethics, prohibited acts, and rules of engagement — optional, in an effort to remove “unnecessary distractions” and increase focus on “decisive action in combat.” This comes as Hegseth trumpets an overwhelming emphasis on “lethality” and cuts to programs that run afoul of Trump administration priorities. Hegseth also reportedly plans to overhaul the entire JAG Corps, which is essential to ensuring adherence to the rule of law and upholding the Uniform Code of Military Justice, after firing the judge advocates general of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Trump has also rolled back constraints on American commanders to authorize airstrikes and Special Operations raids outside conventional battlefields, broadening the range of people who can be targeted. After Trump relaxed targeting principles during his first term, attacks and reports of civilian casualties in war zones like Somalia and Yemen spiked. “There is an overt and ongoing effort to completely shut the Center down and to remove CHMR across all the commands,” said Wes Bryant, who until recently served as the chief of civilian harm assessments and senior analyst and adviser on precision warfare, targeting, and civilian harm mitigation at the Pentagon’s Civilian Protection Center of Excellence. “Basically, they are wiping DoD of anything related to Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response.” As a Fox News personality, Hegseth — a former Army National Guard officer who served in Afghanistan and Iraq — cast troops charged with war crimes as “heroes.” During Trump’s first term in office, Hegseth lobbied for pardons of Army Lt. Clint Lorance and Army Maj. Mathew Golsteyn, and championed Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher, each of whom was charged or convicted of war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Trump granted pardons to Lorance and Golsteyn, and reversed a demotion of Gallagher, tagging Hegseth in a tweet announcing the review of one of the cases. Hegseth takes a dim view of the Geneva Conventions, which form the foundation of the law of armed conflict, or LOAC, and remain the most important rules limiting the barbarity of war by protecting civilians, wounded combatants, and prisoners of war, among others. In his 2024 book, “The War on Warriors,” Hegseth asked, “Should we follow the Geneva conventions? … Aren’t we just better off in winning our wars according to our own rules?” Bryant voiced similar concerns about where the potential demise of CHMR efforts would ultimately lead. “I do worry about the direction that Hegseth and the Trump administration are going after this first step of dissolving the CHMR enterprise. Is this administration now going to try to change the warfighting culture and doctrinal standards of the U.S. military, and have us executing our next conflict more like Israel has carried out in Gaza?” he asked. “If we do get into a large-scale conflict — whether in Europe or China or elsewhere — will we not care one way or another about the civilian populace? Will our current low tolerance for civilian casualties and historically conservative application of ‘proportionality’ under international law be completely reversed?”

Who makes decisions about Antarctica? Antarctica is not within the territory or subject to the sovereignty of any State and does not have a government to represent it and negotiate on its behalf. It is governed by a collective of States under the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). There are currently 56 signatories to the Antarctic Treaty, but only 29 “Consultative Parties” have a vote. Most decisions are made during the Antarctic Treaty System’s yearly Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings (ATCM) and must be made by consensus. This means that a single country can effectively veto a proposal, making it very difficult to achieve significant changes. The ATCM meeting is held in private. Still, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) have observer status. The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) are invited to ATCM meetings to provide specialist expertise. Is the Declaration compatible with the existing ATS? The Declaration is not intended to replace the ATS, nor could it. The adoption of the Declaration would be analogous to the adoption of the (non-binding) Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations on 10 December 1948. Its adoption did not replace international law. Instead, it provided a standard or yardstick of universally accepted norms of human behaviour that could be used to assess existing laws and, if they were found wanting, guide the amendment or replacement of those laws. We hope that the adoption of an Antarctic Declaration will have a similar positive impact on how people perceive and relate to Antarctica and guide the progressive reform of the ATS and laws, policies and institutions at the international, transnational, national and sub-national levels to afford higher levels of protection for Antarctica and Antarctic beings.

The CBC recently estimated that “environment” is the top concern of just 3.8 per cent of voters, while U.S.-Canada relations are top of mind for 28.5 per cent, followed by economy/finance at 23.5 per cent. So Carney’s Liberals have every reason to emphasize a “Canada Strong” policy against Trump, and no reason at all to soft-pedal economic drivers like oil, gas and critical minerals. Emissions are a problem for vague future dates like 2050; dinner on the table is a problem for this evening. If Carney’s energy policy is inadequate, Pierre Poilievre’s policy is just an echo of Trump’s “drill, baby, drill.” Poilievre offers the frantic exploitation of fossil fuels and no mention of climate change — just the evils of the carbon tax. The two candidates do offer something different. With Poilievre, we reach 2 C or 3 C as quickly as possible. With Carney, we buy some time to alert Canadians to a climate disaster before it actually hits us. Carney also offers us a government that might be open to evidence-based arguments, and a prime minister who might be able to minimize the economic damage.

So now, here we are again. Canada is facing threats to its very existence, incredibly from people we thought were our friends. They want our resources, they want our land, they want our fisheries, they want our water, they want our Arctic, maybe they want our souls. I know the US president could use a soul. It takes more than bravado to fight this kind of a threat. It takes brains, deep economic knowledge of how the world works, it takes strong, intelligent strategies, and the ability to recognize and seize opportunities both at home and on the world stage, opportunities that can bring a new level of prosperity and safety to people…..people who right now may be paralyzed with fear as they look to the future of Canada and the world.

Nearly 1,000 Israeli air force reservists and retirees signed a letter, published in domestic media on Thursday, demanding the immediate return of the hostages, even at the cost of ending the fighting. While the soldiers who signed the letter didn’t refuse to keep serving, it's part of a growing wave of Israeli service personnel speaking out against the 18-month conflict, with some saying they saw or did things that crossed ethical lines. "It's completely illogical and irresponsible on behalf of the Israeli policy makers … risking the lives of the hostages, risking the lives of more soldiers and risking lives of many, many more innocent Palestinians, while it had a very clear alternative," retired Israeli Air Force pilot who spearheaded the letter Guy Poran said. Poran added that he was unaware whether anyone who signed the letter had been fired. Since the letter was published, it has gained dozens more signatures, according to him. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu downplayed the letter on Friday, saying it was written by a "small handful of weeds, operated by foreign-funded NGOs whose sole goal is to overthrow the right-wing government." Anyone who encourages refusal will be immediately dismissed, Netanyahu explained.

In previous years you’ve held back from using the word ‘genocide’ in relation to Israel. What altered this exactly? I hesitated before calling my book “Genocide in Gaza” because genocide is a very big word. But the evidence in front of my eyes was overwhelming and growing greater all the time. This is the first genocide which is livestreamed. Countries and leaders don’t usually say “we are committing genocide” and “we want to wipe out the enemy”. They usually conceal it, whereas the Israelis are outspoken about genocide. For one of the chapters in the book, I refer to a database of genocidal statements. It’s shocking what has been publicly stated, not just by marginal figures, but from the likes of the Israeli president Isaac Herzog, who proclaimed that “there are no innocents in Gaza”. No innocents among the 50,000 people who were killed and nearly 20,000 children. There are quotes from Netanyahu that are genocidal, as well as from his former minister of defense, Yoav Gallant, who said “we are up against human animals”. I hesitated to call things genocide before October 2023, but what tipped the balance for me was when Israel stopped all humanitarian aid into Gaza. They are using starvation as a weapon of war. That’s genocide.

Of the 17 men who volunteered to go on a mission to save lives, 15 were voluntarily murdered in cold blood, one survived & one paramedic, Assad al-Nazara is missing, his fate still unknown.

What should other nations do? My strong recommendation to Canada, Mexico, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the European Union is to join together to create a free trade zone that excludes the United States, imposing at least a 10 percent tariff on all imports from America. They should also threaten to limit American banks’ access to their public stock markets, put limits on what their citizens can invest in American companies annually, and increase taxes and regulations on American digital platforms. They will be tempted to negotiate and do so individually. They should not. They need to negotiate from a position of strength. A non-U.S. free trade union will give them that strength.

Carney moved during his first day in office as prime minister to eliminate the consumer carbon price. The oil and gas CEOs want to go further. They said the industrial carbon price “is not globally cost competitive and should be repealed to allow provincial governments to set more suitable carbon regulations.” Carney has said he would keep the industrial carbon price, although he has proposed to “improve and tighten” it. Polievere, however, said he would “axe the entire Liberal carbon tax law, including the federal law that requires the provinces to impose an industrial carbon tax.” Instead, he said he would let provinces “continue to have the freedom to address this issue how they like,” without any federal obligations. The Canadian Climate Institute report said the industrial carbon price would be the “single biggest driver of emissions reductions in 2030.” In its decision, the Supreme Court found that it was necessary for Parliament to address carbon pricing at a national level, or else there would be “irreversible consequences for the environment, for human health and safety and for the economy.” “This irreversible harm would be felt across the country and would be borne disproportionately by vulnerable communities and regions in Canada,” according to the decision.

For Zionists, according to Molot, Zionism is primarily an appeal to emotion. On the other hand, he said that the Palestinian liberation movement is backed by the notion of Zionism as a very real and material concept. He added that, in regard to the ongoing actions of the Israeli government, Zionism represents a military project and a repressive regime. “I think the state of Israel is seen as this redemptive project [to Zionists], but what pro-Palestine activists are getting at in their critiques of Zionism is not necessarily that Jews don’t have a right to safety,” Molot said. “What they’re really getting at is the construction of an inherently violent regime; it’s a project that crushes bones and puts bullets in babies’ heads.” While groups such as IJV have greatly helped Jewish pro-Palestine activists such as Saltiel to find a sense of community among other anti-Zionist Jewish activists, a majority of Jewish people in Canada still identify with Zionism and the state of Israel. According to a 2024 New Israel Fund study, 84 per cent of Canada’s Jewish population say they are “very” or “somewhat” emotionally attached to Israel. The study also found that 51 per cent of Canada’s Jewish population consider themselves Zionists. “At the same time that the Jewish Left movement is gaining traction, it’s still a minority in Montreal, and especially in Canada,” Molot said. Looking ahead, Saltiel says that IJV has no plans to stop its activism for Palestine simply due to the ceasefire agreement that was recently put in place. “We are not slowing down simply because there has been some version of a ceasefire,” Saltiel said. “We believe it needs to go far beyond this, including an actual liberation of Palestine.” For activists like Reed, the return to promoting ideologies stemming from deep-rooted Jewish movements such as the JLB provides a framework for the future of anti-Zionist Jewish activists. “It’s a really important and amazing reclamation that has been happening for a long time, but especially, I think generations now are more interested in their own heritage,” Reed said. “There’s been this resurgence in understanding this [lesser known] history.”
