Interested in genetics & attitudes to climate change. Once did research - now teach mostly. Trying to figure out what to do here. Serious science stuff or bad cartoons?

Updated sea level rise IPCC graph, with my scribbles from trying to understand it.

I had thought that this would be similar to the commonly used,

"How concerned are you about climate change?" question.

But this seems more divided.

A question where everyone has an opinion & few intermediate views.

I'd be interested to see if there are real studies on this.

This is how these diagrams are usually presented.

Looks good (arguably better), but much less clear; I never really understood what was going on.

I prefer the new simplified linear version.

How people are changing the life-support systems of our planet.

Mostly bad.

Now, in the 🇬🇧, ~25% think that "the threat of global warming is not as real as many scientists have said."

Steady increase in the last 5 years - from around 15%.

62% say the threat is 'every bit as real.

Not many votes, but opinion so far is definitely divided.

Maximum temperatures 🌡recorded in the UK 🇬🇧, with measurements above 35C in red/orange.

A handy guide to the impacts of warming our planet.

From linked paper summarising the impacts of #climate on health.

A more colourful version ..

A few days on, similar ratio among climate researchers & the rest.

Many of the climate people have moved to here now.
July 8, 2025 at 7:27 PM
Something like this would be useful for extreme rain/ flooding.

Even if it will be very different between regions.
July 8, 2025 at 6:11 AM
Now lots of serious climate researchers have moved here after abandoning X. What do people here reckon?

Are climate change researchers - on the whole- doing a good job at communicating?

Important results for our future #climate 🌎 🌳 🐟

Lots of people think that it will just take a modest reduction in greenhouse gas emissions 🔥 ⛽️ to solve climate change.

OK, seems more likely than not that someone born in the 🇬🇧 this year & lives to 90 will experience 45-degree C heatwave.

(Back of envelope calculation assuming similar trend since 1950)
June 25, 2025 at 9:39 AM
Chances of 40C heatwave in th 🇬🇧 is now about 1 in 25. In 1975, this was about 1 in 300.

The chances are now:
42C - 1 in 100 chance
43C - 1 in 200 chance
44C - 1 in 400 chance
45C - 1 in 800 chance
46C - 1 in 1000 chance

A study looking at the boiling 🐸 (frog) theory in communicating gradual environmental shifts.

For maximum impact, avoid continuous trends. 🌧 🌡

These have less impact than showing than binary variables (lake freezing or not freezing).

Similar question. Equally divided.
May 4, 2025 at 3:47 PM
This question turned out to be surprisingly divisive & brought out lots of different ideas & beliefs.

As it is Earth Day 🌎, a reminder of why serious climate action is essential:

The timescale of this graph includes:
- the period when humans transitioned from hunter-gatherer to farming.
- the start of organised societies.
- the translation to burning 🔥 fossil fuels.

Climate and global #GDP

3C warming - 40% decrease
4C warming- 60% decrease

The details of the model would be fascinating. What it includes, and what it doesn't.

April 17, 2025 at 11:23 AM
The graph from the paper suggests 60% GDP, I think.

Imperfect models can be useful, though. Do you think it's just a question of highlighting the limitations in the discussion? Or should they not be attempted?

It was surprisingly hard to find pictures at the right level of detail and were still in focus when the size was increased.
