It's this simple ...
1. We need foreign care workers.
2. We had EU ones before Brexit.
3. They left after Brexit.
4. We needed to replace them with foreign workers from Africa and Asia.
5. They came from further away, so they needed to bring their families.
6. Racists didn't like that.

And I found that even if you did talk about daily life (routine searches, army lying in the hedges a night, bombing, shooting, forced evictions, segregation, pet dogs being poisioned by the army), ppl looked at you in disbelief. So, it was simpler not to talk.

Brilliantly written. Three of my brothers (all younger) died suddenly (one only two years ago). I find that time and grief are elastic: sometimes it feels like a long time ago, other times, only yesterday. I like the poem "So many different lengths of time" (Brian Patten) describes the concept.
