Is there a protest happening?? I don't see anything on the news (or on YouTube...I know we're unlikely to see it on the news)

You can also turn on logged off invisibility, which means people not on (or not logged onto Bluesky) can't see your posts. You find that under settings - go to the menu at top left. You can also block or mute users easily.

Yes, public, but there are a couple of caveats to that. When you create a post, you have a choice of who can interact with it. You can limit that audience to people you mention or people who are following you.
