Did you guys have a session 0? Normally before a campaign starts, there's a session 0 in which the DM will explain the general plot of the story, the dos and don'ts and not to mention anything that could be triggering.
I usually recommend doing these so everyone can have a happy 1st session.

Remember that it's always OK to step away from the table if the talks don't go well. You and your friends owe the DM nothing. If the DM doesn't want to listen to your concerns, there are plenty of groups in the Astral sea!
