Most of the time when he cries, it's not the mournful, bereaved sobbing he knows from the movies. Instead, his grief manifests as small but ceaseless tearfulness. Warm tears well up in his eyes, in a perpetual cycle of sting, tear, dry. He learns that tears don't lubricate the eyes. They're too briny and dry out the skin, so he's constantly reapplying eyedrops, and it starts to hurt. His eyes feel thick and swollen, the corneas hard and inflexible, the lids red and rough.

Phil returned to her sofa, trying not to look at the other woman. She resumed her position from before, letting Dan stand awkwardly in the middle of the room. "You had fun," Dan said, scoffing lightly at the sight of beer bottles scattered about the place. Phil shrugged. "Yeah, well, you kind of broke my heart." She wasn't going to tell her about her friends coming over, because it would probably make her cry, and she'd had enough of that for today. Dan could believe what she wanted to. There was the sound of Dan delicately taking off her coat and hanging it on the back of a chair. A quiet tension hung about the room. In it, they remained silent for half a minute or so. Suddenly, Dan spoke, rather insistently. "I have to apologise," she said. "I hurt your feelings. I'm sorry." "Wow," Phil said sarcastically. "How heartfelt of you." But she didn't look at her. Looking at her would unravel something she'd worked hard on winding up the past few hours. They were just two voices, talking. "I'm trying," Dan said apologetically. "I thought — we could try again." "Try what again? You said there was nothing there." Christ, here we go again, Phil thought. She wiped a tear from her eye before it reached her cheekbone. Dan voiced something barely audible. "What?" "Can you please — look at me?" Her voice wavered on the please. "Please." Phil sat up. She looked.

Dan towered over her, three stairs up, and she had to crane her head up to make eye contact. "I am." Dan leaned on the railing with her elbow. "Did you know," she said, crossing one foot in front of the other, "that I'm very good at making bad decisions?"

Dan spoke in a gasp. “Yeah?” “Hmm,” Phil mumbled against her skin. “'S very disappointing when you cancel on me.” “Sorry,” Dan breathed. “I didn’t, ah, fuck– ” Phil was sucking on her skin, clearly wanting to bruise it on purpose, leave a mark that would last more than a few hours. “No hickeys,” Dan choked out. “I’m– unh – I’m a professional.”
