Thanks again @oliviawalch.bsky.social for the time and the chat for @smbmathbiology.bsky.social's podcast #BiologyInNumbers. It was super cool learning about your work @arcascope.bsky.social ⏰☀️💊

I very much enjoyed thinking about how to present this introductory guide, as well as speaking with IMO folks yesterday about #SciComm.
And I may have included one or more melodramatic messages to impress upon people the need for more and better communication 🫣

I will never get over the irony of seeing what ends up behind a paywall.

Also reminds me of Bclassic ollywood movie posters from the 60s. Just to offer breadth to the demographics they probably hit.

Part of its remit is to support the community, so it's cool to see downloads worldwide, reflecting @smbmathbiology.bsky.social's international members. It's also great to see the # of followers on different platforms indicating regular listeners. Go to smb.org/podcast to subscribe if you haven't!

This year we wrapped up S2 of Biology in Numbers for @smbmathbiology.bsky.social. I've loved hearing scientists talk passionately about #MathBio. Digging into the data to learn about the podcast’s reach, it seems so do many others.
So here is the podcast by the numbers, starting with an intro. 1/2

Uffff, that was a heart stopper! I suspect @cancerevo.org 🇪🇸 and I might be on opposite sides of a final again...

BTW, anyone know what all the official hashtags are? Because there doesn't seem to be any consistency.

Now back to the business of gathering material for #BiologyInNumbers season 3.
Thank you to everyone who has already sat down with me for a minisode. I never fail to be delighted by the fun and quirky answers to these questions.

At lunch I found @danielcooney1.bsky.social, who's been diligently sharing all @smbmathbiology.bsky.social related posts. Unsurprisingly, during his episode, we discussed using social media to talk science, and his use of game theory in his work:

After running into her several times, today I finally got my pic with @suzannesindi.bsky.social. Her episode covered her role on the society nomination committee, prion proteins and, thank you Suzanne for introducing me to the Murderbot series!

Since @staceyfinley.bsky.social didn't make it to Korea last year, I was pleased to find her at #SMB2025. Here we are as 2 members of the Baggy Jeans Brigade.

I can't talk about this poster session without mentioning this work of art by Thomas Woolley. Sadly I didn't get a pic with his Turing pattern waistcoat, but man, what a way to ensure traffic to a poster!
Thomas will be one of the "minisode" guests from this meeting 🦇🧪

At the evening poster session and social, I caught up with Mohit Kumar Jolly, with whom I had the pleasure of nerding out about #scicomm. Our episode covered changing cancer cells, awards and the Indian Institutes of Technology 🧪 smb.org/news/13482578

One of the question prompts I have for this year's "minisodes", short recordings with #SMB2025 attendees, is: how do you overcome the overwhelm that is a scientific conference? I'm likely going to engage in some form of exercise 🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♀️

Around the same time I met up with incoming @smbmathbiology.bsky.social president Reinhard Laubenbacher; a scientist interested in using math to understand human disease. We talked about parasites, motorbikes, and digital twins. 🧪

I caught Marissa Renardy in the coffee area, wearing a shirt from a previous @smbmathbiology.bsky.social in Montreal. Our first guest from industry, we spoke about big pharma, in silico trials, a new pharmacometrics subgroup, and sciencing for fun 🧪 smb.org/news/13506725

I found Jay Newby seen here aptly standing in the plenary hall. His expertise lie in applied stochastic processes and machine learning tools for bio-image analysis. We chatted about his role as a meeting organizer, neurons & gumbatine.

First was Mark Lewis, a math ecologist at the U of Victoria. He uses math models to understand the environment and our human impacts. In his episode we talked about: the Akira Okobu prize, the (excellently named) Fokker-Planck equation, and the movement of bears.

Another year, another @smbmathbiology.bsky.social, which I now consider my adoptive scientific society. This time with my new affiliation.
Wonderful opening words from outgoing president Jane Heffernan along with a prayer in Cree from a local elder.

This year has been one of profound personal loss, but one advantage of my work is that I have opportunities to do something meaningful for others affected by #cancer.
My next gig explores flaws in healthcare, fair treatments access & innovations to address them.

A week away from the start of the @smbmathbiology.bsky.social meeting in #Edmonton so it seems like an apt time to share my convo with conference organizer, Jay Newby. You'll also hear me nerding out about potassium channels in neurons 🧠

The latest @smbmathbiology.bsky.social #podcast was with Marissa Renardy. As someone with a background in Pharmacology it was cool to learn about the new SMB subgroup on Pharmacometrics, and to get a perspective from an industry scientist.
