oh, wait. I think Kaine was actually the First Officer, and Ripley was next after him. I think she says that when Dallas and Kaine are off ship, she’s in charge.

That’s incorrect. In Alien, had they listened to Ripley, the xeno would never have gotten aboard the ship, but Ash let them on board against her explicit orders.
