And the Food Policy article is the entree.

Not snark, just curiosity about AI.

I asked Microsoft CoPilot to provide a supply and demand chart with a sugar sweetened beverage tax.

The text response has supply shift and a new equilibrium with a lower quantity.

The image has demand shift and a new equilibrium with a higher quantity.

On an early morning walk in Pittsburgh before work tasks this week, in the Hill District, past the home of playwright August Wilson and the sad site of the publicly financed supermarket from the Healthy Food Financing Initiative, now shuttered again. Many lessons learned.

My "office" view of Mystic Harbor on the Connecticut coastline shortly after sunrise, lovely in every weather, while traveling by Amtrak this morning, on my way to Pittsburgh and then Ohio State to give a talk about federal nutrition assistance policy. #BusinessTravel while #flyingless.

The house smells nice today after baking bread for the annual food-policy-themed potluck at a @tuftsnutrition.bsky.social faculty colleague's home this evening (with contributions and reflections from students on foods that are inexpensive, sustainable, culturally meaningful, or quick to make).

Sailing on Boston Harbor on a breezy summer afternoon with @willmasters.bsky.social, practicing dropping and raising the anchor, and, for conversation, in our imagination, solving global food systems challenges.

Some say that sustainable foods cost too much.

Yet, Elena Martinez and colleagues and me in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition this week note that more expensive foods (such as more expensive meats) are comparatively high-carbon on average.

With the NYTimes reporting on Mamdani's application to Columbia, critics rightly emphasize the use of hacked information from a racist anonymous source.

The Times instead wants to be seen as having just stated facts.

I see the words "but" and "another" as the Times' own falsehoods, not just facts.

Yum. Raspberry jam made last night. Local food where "local" is measured from bushes 10 yards away visible in the photo. Next winter, this will remind us of summer.

Continuing a theme for the week, reading and understanding the Constitution is an excellent exercise in American patriotism, and it helps us understand the daily newspaper.
June 20, 2025 at 12:54 PM
The Constitution has much to say on controversial issues in the news. As an American, we give it due honor and respect.

In recent years, I've been reading the Constitution more frequently. Feeling proud and patriotic. This Constitution deserves to be respected.
