Not actually a Pussy-Owl.
Well, it might seem a bit of an unlikely 'holy grail' but at one point, having not even found a picture of it, I did wonder if this issue even existed.

It is indeed! Helpfully, Nancy Banks-Smith quotes that line in her review.

I only saw it when C4 showed it in 1987, at which time it seemed good but glacially slow. 1969 a tad early for me, and I had no idea it had been shown in '78 too. 5:45 on a Sunday wouldn't have been prime viewing time for our family, which may also be why I have no idea what "Katy" was on BBC1.

Once upon a time I clicked on an image on Amazon just to find out what the hell it was. Now Amazon thinks I just forgot to buy it and need repeated reminders.

Further study: Larson's article about it is a castle study in "Strategy and structure : short readings for composition" (1996 - archive.org/details/stra... is the 2nd edition)

Am I imagining it, or is this a collage? The hair looks cut out. Could just be due to the tinting, I suppose. Incidentally, that cash register behind the bar is a National model, possibly a 349 or similar.

This clearly doesn't say Beef twister. But I dunno what a Beef swisher would be, either.

The illustration (by Gunvor Edwards) in the actual book is I suppose more helpfully instructive, but not as much fun.

Multiple time Countdown winner, though. I thought they were supposed to be super-cool.

I'm puzzled by "toe the scratch" - it seems to mean the same as "toe the line" but doesn't quite make sense here. "Foot on the rail" is a definite theme in bar stories but unfortunately has not revealed the source of Rhea Perlmancs image. For example, a few months later...

Another data point - January 1918 article about women drinking at the bar of the Hotel Majestic, by Central Park in NYC. Kelsey Grammer just out of frame.

This one finally succumbed to a reverse image search - if only a caption, not an original source. The caption is "After the ball at Billy McGlory's 'Joint'" - which would place it in New York.

A less cropped version of the Royal Rooters photo (not found where it's from, nor if left handed or right handed is the original!)
