This is a picture of the 2017 album Pure Comedy by American musician Father John Misty, a pseudonym for Josh Tillman, formerly of Fleet Foxes. Produced with Jonathan Wilson, Tillman made this a concept album about a species with a ‘half-formed brain’. The cover shows examples of this species, drawn on black and white against an orange sky and yellow moon. The people are cartoons, and. They look miserable. The album, by comparison, is wonderful.

This is a picture of the 2024 album We Are Here To Help by British keyboardist Benjamin Croft. This record couldn’t be more prog. Great songs and a great lineup, with Frank Gambale, Stu Hamm, Marco Minnemann, Simon Phillips, Billy Sheehan and the great Lynsey Ward. The cover shows robots with a brush and bucket, cleaning up in a desolate landscape.

This is a picture of the 1990 album Concerto For Saxophone by American (film) composer Michael Kamen. The main event of this record is the three part “Concerto for Sanborn and Orchestra” that Kamen wrote in 1989. Oddly, the score wasn’t published until 2003. It features the late great David Sanborn on alto sax, but the other players on the five shorter tracks are great too. For instance, there’s Pino Palladino on bass and David Gilmour and Eric Clapton on solo guitar. The Concerto is really beautiful, Sanborn plays his heart out. The cover shows the face of Michael Kamen in black and white in a old picture frame.

This is a picture of the 2018 reissue of the 1977 triple album Consequences by Lol Creme & Kevin Godley. This brilliant folly was supposed to be a single album promoting the Gizmo, a tool for making guitars sound like a string section, but it soon got out of hand. Peter Cook was asked to do a sort of mini play and pretty soon his participation sparked new ideas with Lol and Kevin, which inspired Peter, etc. The triple album was released in a classy but expensive box set, the price of which was the last nail in the coffin. The album sold poorly and Godley & Creme never tried anything so bold ever again. That’s a pity, because the music is quite beautiful and with every new play you discover new things. The cover shows a threatening cloud with a scary face against a black night. The cloud was made of cottonwool, by the way.

This is a picture of the 1979 album Over The Top by British rock drummer Cozy Powell. He was a sort of superhero in my teens, and this album is a stunner. It features Gary Moore, Jack Bruce, Clem Clempson and Bernie Marsden. The sleeve show Cozy on a motorbike, jumping over his famous drumkit with the double bass drum.

This is a picture of the 2023 album Bluefinger by Dutch singer-songwriter Bertolf Lentink. This is bluegrass music, recorded in Nashville with the cream of the crop of American bluegrass stars like Jerry Douglas and Stuart Duncan. The songs are all tracks from his previous (and wonderful) albums, rerecorded in the bluegrass style. Moving and uplifting, this is a quietly stunning album.

This is a picture of the 1981 album Passage by Windham Hill guitarist William Ackerman. Eight pieces for solo guitar, some with violin, piano or cello played by other WH artists like Darol Anger and George Winston. It sounds sublime, digitally recorded acoustic instruments played by virtuoso’s. The cover shows a photo of the silhouette of trees in the mist on a white background.

This is a picture of the 2012 album Dream Logic by Norwegian jazz musician Eivind Aarset together with jazz and electronica producer Jan Bang. Off course it’s on the ECM label. The music has a lot in common with that of David Sylvian: ambient, electronic music with an emphasis on guitar. The cover is a blurry vision with trees and (probably) car lights. The album is beautiful.

This is a picture of the 1970 album Brinsley Schwarz by pubrock band Brinsley Schwarz. It’s mainly a very yellow background with a drawing of an indian on horseback, peering in the distance. This album had much more in common with CSN&Y type bands, so not much pubrock at all. It is rather beautiful nonetheless the less.

This is the 2013 album Kind Of Pink by Belgian flautist and saxophonist Philippe Laloy. It’s one of the hundreds of interpretations of the music of Pink Floyd, but this one is kind of special. A blend of soft jazz, world music and classical music, with songs from Dark Side Of The Moon, but also Meddle and Wish You Were Here. Very good stuff.

This is a picture of the 1982 album English Settlement by British band XTC. The cover depicts the Uffington White Horse and very little else. This is one of their finest, with a couple of songs you could almost call prog (Ball And Chain for instance). Off course it features Senses Working Overtime. It was released as a double album, but there’s also a shorter, 1 LP version with only 10 of the songs.

This is a picture of the 2006 album Compass by the Swiss/Dutch jazz singer Susanne Abbuehl of the famous ECM label. Beautiful quiet songs, sometimes almost whispered, with gorgeous accompaniment, particularly the clarinets of Christof May and Michel Portal. Abbuehl was head of the jazz department of the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag 2020-2022.

This is a picture of the 2012 album Crown And Treaty by British art rock band Sweet Billy Pilgrim. Stunning music, all over the map. There’s prog, but also folk, experimental stuff and electronica. This one is somewhere in the middle and really good.

This is s picture of the 1976 album Sargasso Sea by jazz guitarists John Abercrombie and Ralph Towner. The paring of the very different styles of playing gives this ECM production a magical breeziness that’s perfect for a Sunday morning.

This is a picture of the 1987 album Whatever by British jazz-folk bassist Danny Thompson, who sadly died today. This is a gorgeous and gentle album, with only Tony Roberts on saxes and flutes and Bernie Holland on guitar. Danny is most revered for his work with Kate Bush and John Martyn, but on this record he’s in a class of his own.

This is a picture of the 1981 album Nightwalker by Canadian singer Gino Vannelli. This is his seventh, and last jazz-rock-prog records. After this, it was mostly pop and, much later, straight up jazz. Nice, bit not as stunning as this. With the outstanding Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, the opening salvo of Nightwalker, Seek And You Shall Find and Put The Weight On My Shoulders, this is a phenomenal album.
