Gotta say that he is entertaining to watch.

I should also add that even though EWR became a L2 airport, the FAA kept operations largely the same, if not slightly lower. They weren’t going to allow more than 77 operations an hour, whereas the L3 limit was. 81.

They handled more operations in 2016 than they do now. A lot more. EWR currently has fewer flights than LGA. Delays now are caused by staffing issues, radar feed failures and runway reconstruction. Two of the three are directly related to the move to PHL.

Incorrect. They’ve been having issues since the move to PHL.
May 3, 2025 at 5:09 AM
Funny that EWR always had the worst delays of the 3 NYC major airports, but was the first to lose L3 status. They have to put it back again, and at much lower levels than before. EWR problems won’t be going away any time soon and this is unfortunately the only way to at least ease the pain.

Move to PHL was a disaster. Was never going to work, especially the way they did it. Fewer controllers and a half-assed attempt to create a feed. And even PHL is tough to staff. Tougher now that nobody wants to work the EWR sector with the mess it’s become.

First comment on this I’ve seen that sums it up correctly.

But they gave their approval, no?
May 3, 2025 at 4:49 AM
This is not correct. They didn’t “quit”. They’re on leave because of prior move-related equipment failures which caused stress and subsequent health issues. Kirby was the one publicly supporting the transfer to PHL, ironically. EWR will go back to slot controls, but they’ll be at really low levels

Driving or taking a ride share service. Public transit options from where I live to the airport are trash. Public transit to LGA is garbage in general. Takes way less time for me to drive or take an Uber than it would with your options.

What?! Makes no sense. They're in the playoffs, too. Wonder what happened behind the scenes.

I thought they got rid of their slots?

what a disaster...

Considering that UA will have to decrease flights to their EWR hub for the foreseeable future, this IAD expansion doesn't surprise me.

any plans for an ipad app?
November 20, 2024 at 7:09 PM
Doubtful. UA’s for the move because FAA promised improved arrival rates. If anything, they’ll just repeat the line about there being “growing pains” and this is best for the long run. Truth is the arrival rate won’t increase (will go down) and delays will get worse before they get better.
November 19, 2024 at 11:26 PM
These problems will continue for a while. Avoid EWR if possible.
November 18, 2024 at 4:18 AM
hard to get controllers to move to the northeast in general for COL and cultural reasons (controllers are usually conservative). NYC centers are also complex and have a low pass rate. Jacksonville staffing issues aren’t as bad, but I hear it’s a bad working environment with a poor training program.
November 16, 2024 at 12:21 AM
Total disaster that is the FAA's own doing. They were warned that it wasn't going to work, but went ahead with it anyways.
November 15, 2024 at 8:22 PM
Moving EWR sector to PHL has been an unmitigated disaster on all levels. It's even causing more staffing issues, which the move was supposed to address. This is all on the FAA.
November 15, 2024 at 5:14 PM
Ha
November 15, 2024 at 4:54 AM
Might as well. Some days, they’re running arrivals at single runway rates.
November 15, 2024 at 4:53 AM
They really need an ipad app
