Just reading about Confucian officials has me going "same, honestly" Like sometimes you get a guy who's cool and practical, but more often you get a clique of goobers obsessed with peasants wearing too nice clothes being responsible for the breakdown of order in Sichuan or whatever.

Yeah the ability to keep a dog around purely for companionship is starting to become available for more than just the aristocrats in Europe around this time, so it makes sense that the kind of people who travel to China and get painted would frequently have them.

It's interesting that Qianlong refers to British subjects as "your barbarian merchants", but never goes quite so far as to refer to George or his ambassador that way. I guess it's inappropriate to say that about a tribute mission. Even one that's weird and pushy and very clearly confused.

Even setting aside his stupid illiterate framing for liking a franchise; it's incredible to see someone attributing "the whole start of the plot" of Star Wars to character background we learn 2/5 of the way in. I'm pretty sure Thiel hasn't actually seen star wars now.

The obsession of attempting to distinguish between the "deserving" poor and all these imagined freeloaders would crop up again in England's first poor relief laws in the 16th century. And the obsession hasn't really ever left anglophone conversations about the social safety net.
