If I had a nickel for every time a classic arcade game got a dark and gritty reinterpretation etc. etc.

Sure, might as well, if I can even still call myself a fanfic writer

This is the third time an order from Sentai Filmworks has come to me with the cases falling apart; this is fucking ridiculous

10. Tales of Symphonia. This rocked my world at age 12, and it still holds up remarkably well. An RPG with real time combat, a twisty plot and fun, memorable characters. Other Tales games have iterated and improved upon this, but this laid the foundation for 3D Tales, and remains a comforting fave

9. Signalis. One of the best survival horror games I've played in ages. Takes from the very best while still telling a story unlike any other. Incredible visuals, sound, atmosphere and gameplay, equal parts tense and dreadful. My eye is on rose engine for whatever they make next

8. Xenogears. This game was made for me. Magnificently cool setting, wildly ambitious plot, fantastic visuals and music, and a super engaging turn-based combat system. Has some rough edges, especially in disc 2, but still phenomenal, and made me a lifelong Xeno fan

7. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Always loved this era of Zelda, and this one is my favorite; hauntingly beautiful and unique, with some of the most heartbreaking writing and memorable environments. An all time classic

6. Hotel Dusk: Room 215. A cozy adventure/visual novel that just breathes style and class, all while being incredibly inventive and using the DS in ways few other devs ever did. Still need to play that sequel, cause damn was this game great

5. Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. One of the few sequels Treasure ever made, and it ended up being one of the best light gun games ever; blisteringly fast, ridiculously cool gameplay, and excellent presentation. It's hard as hell, but definitely a classic for all you score attack junkies

4. Resident Evil (2002). This game is strangely comforting for me. It's chill and creepy atmosphere, rhythmic survival horror gameplay and fantastic visuals all feel like a warm blanket on a winter's night. Very easy to go back to and just vibe

3. 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. The first entry in the Zero Escape series remains the best; a labyrinthine thriller with ridiculously engaging writing, characters and atmosphere that shakes things up just enough with escape room puzzles, all to tell a story only really possible in video games
October 21, 2024 at 6:21 AM
2. Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner. My personal gold standard mech game; gorgeous mech designs courtesy of Yoji Shinkawa and Kazuma Kaneko, lightning fast combat that's perfectly fine-tuned, and a simple but memorable story about war, revenge and dehumanization that doesn't outstay its welcome

1. Starting off with a recent(-ish) fave, it's The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories. A beautiful puzzle platformer that masterfully weaves its gameplay with its heartfelt narrative and themes. J.J.'s story lives in my head rent free, definitely the best thing Swery has made

"No one but me remembers" Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon. A somber adventure game set in the aftermath of one of the most unique and beautiful apocalypses, focusing not on survival, but on connection, environmental story telling, and atmosphere
