I was in classes that would eventually lead to a game design course further down the line when I came across Cave Story. It made me realize it was actually, genuinely possible to create and publish a game on your own. I never did take that course. Instead, I dedicated myself to making Owlboy.
December 20, 2004 saw the release of Doukutsu Monogatari, AKA Cave Story, a free game that was quickly translated into English and became the talk of the Internet. It's hard to estimate the impact it had on the indie scene and on the resurgence of 2D outside handheld consoles.
