I usually get one or two indie games on Steam every so often just to have fun with. They usually have a few inventive ideas to mess around with and have pretty interesting art styles. I think many people who get burned out buying triple-A games constantly would also find fun doing the same.

I've always felt that this problem started when the video game industry realized that they could use photorealism as a marketing tactic like when larger studious try to make "the next gen experience" with high realism but little to no actual gameplay innovation that focuses on broad appeal.
