Kyle, meanwhile, stood by the cracked mirror over the utility sink, head tilted as a hand ghosted over his jawline. The click of the razor being set beside the sink echoed through the room far louder than it had any right to, followed by the hiss of shaving cream depositing into his palm and the thud of the can as he set it aside.

John's fingers ghosted over his ribs again, just beneath the blanket—brushing through the faint sheen of sweat that managed to build thanks to the shared warmth radiating beneath the blanket. He wasn't freezing anymore, at least, just… cool. Clammy. But alive. Alive. John pressed his forehead into the edge of Simon's shoulder and exhaled hard. His chest ached. His spine hurt. Every cut and scrape on his body itched. And his heart—Christ, his heart hadn't ever felt this battered and bruised. He was fucking tired. Yet he didn't dare close his eyes. What if Simon needed him again? What if something went wrong and this miracle he was holding onto snuffed out like a choked flame? What if he missed Simon's last moment of wakefulness bleeding into his last smile into his last breath and then he was just gone and John couldn't follow him— John drew in another shuddering, aching breath. Tears pricked at the corners of his eyes. But he didn't dare move.
