My usual answer is going to be either Dragonbane or Into the Labyrinth. Both are so driven by character customization without being overly complex.

It is funny attempting to explain the inspiration for the mechanics and monsters of D&D simply because a lot of younger players cannot wrap their heads around the ideas. Had a DM I liked a lot go cross eyed when I explained to him what spell slots are supposed to represent.
