Linguist und Fahrradfahrer in Toronto
The TTC streetcar map is pure fiction. When was the last time all lines actually ran on their regular route? The 1990s?

People aren’t just „mad about such a question“ in a vacuum — this has been a linguistics meme for decades. Generations of American linguists have been taught to be upset about this question. I’m just pointing that out. But I guess I know nothing and you’re the arbiter of all things linguistic

And its outright denial of the relevance of linguistic difference (see also the spectre of the „Sapir-Whorf“ strawman) — this made sense when funding for linguistics depended on telling the US Defense Department that all languages are essentially the same

Oops I thought I had written „tacit“ endorsement. But I think the annoyance with the question comes out of the Chomskyean tradition with its insistence that studying English was enough

Sorry but I never heard a linguist complain about this question before I came to the US. I don’t disagree with you that it reflects a misunderstanding on the part of the person who is asking. What bothers me is that US linguists have turned this into a proud pet peeve

Yes, but the fixation of Anglophone linguists on this question is itself a problem

Sorry I didn’t mean it in that way — see my other comment

Linguistics should not be about monolingualism. Linguistics as a science needs to be able to explain why there are different languages. Claiming that linguistics is not about that just serves as an excuse to study only English and marginalized the rest of humanity
December 1, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Sorry my comment was meant more as a comment on the fact that American linguists love to make this complaint — which I take to be an endorsement of English language imperialism
December 1, 2025 at 4:49 PM
All the more reason to reject the framing that linguistics as a science should be about monolingualism
December 1, 2025 at 4:46 PM
Linguistic diversity is also an essential fact of language. Linguistics also needs to explain why all humans don’t speak the same language

Or „one“ (aka „English“)
December 1, 2025 at 1:56 AM
Only Anglocentric linguists are afraid of that question

Not to mention that cars regularly careen onto the sidewalk (where there is one)

It would be better without the stupid airshow

Was bitte ist mehr „Identätspolitik“ als diese Haltung, in der das ganze Weltgeschehen nur dazu dient, das eigene Distinkionsbedürfnis zu befriedigen

How do you know that they have „authentic selves“?

The people who keep destroying the camera on Parkside Drive are actively against saving lives
