I sometimes see the practice that API’s return the status in the result message. Depending on the status the result contains an error messages or the request content. What do you think about these kinds of implementations?

This has been my experience too. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. People will tell you that they will give you time to improve/fix it later but this rarely happens.
