Admittedly, Phainon already had concerns about Mydeimos when he noticed that the boy barely spoke, and looked like a bundle of sticks wearing soggy clothes, but those concerns became ever more clear as he watched Mydeimos once they had gone inside. There was an obvious reluctance in his mannerisms, staying tucked within the safety of the blanket Audata had wrapped around him to dry him off and keep him warm. He remained close to Phainon, a hand gripping the edge of his tunic, as if something would pull him away at any moment, and once they were inside, he shrunk in a little closer, avoiding the furniture as best he could. Snowy, for his part, had taken a quick liking to Mydeimos, plastering himself to the boy’s side and attempting to shove his head under his free arm to comfort him. Thankfully Mydeimos now knew that Snowy was just as harmless as he looked, and took to petting between his ears to keep himself calm. “I can’t even begin to imagine how you ended up here,” Audata continued to ramble, sorting through cupboards and cabinets. “And from Castrum Kremnos at that, that’s so far away!”

For the last eleven years of his life, it was a simple existence. Wake up, help his parents with chores, sit through lessons with Pythias, help tend the fields with the adults, train with his makeshift wooden sword, play in the Maze with Cyrene and the fairies, return home for dinner, and go to sleep to do it all again the next day. It was quaint, nothing flashy, nothing to write grand epics about, but it was home, and it was Phainon’s life. Of course, such peaceful monotony only made things that much more complicated when Phainon spotted a body floating in the water not far from the docks.
